TO the argument about reaction time: deal with it. if everyone in the room is affected by reaction time, then everyone in the room is going to have a slight delay. If you search Water Clock Lesson Plans, you get a pretty good starting point.
Has anyone got any really great ideas on Water clocks?

What type of suspension for the pendulum would you use? I built one pendulum and it was basically a piece of string hanging off of a small metal hook. It was pretty accurate but it lost too much energy.

Basically I'm looking for a frictionless way to hold up a metal rod and allows it to pivot as well.

so far my partner and i have been failing in every attempt that we have tried in making our clock
we really could use some advice on designs
i know that we are all competitors but i was hoping that maybe you guys could help us out because we've really dug a hole for ourselves and are in way over our head

i just made a pendulum and it has worked very well for me. all you need is a string, weight, a frame, and some tape. using the timers on the scioly website has helped a lot

yeah thats helped a lot for me

with my pendulum clock i have been able to predict the time and my average amount im off is about .1 seconds

i dont think you need it to not lose friction. it should lose time at the same rate every time so instead of using a physics formula, use many test results and use a regression to predict times. at least thats what ive done

Camden SO 09, what have you guys made so far? Maybe don't look at what you've done so far as failed attempts of making your a clock, you've just made clocks needing improvement on the accuracy.

Faraway, if your pendulum is stopping due to friction too quickly so that it is not able to last the entire 5 minutes, maybe you can try using a stiff rod instead of a string. That will probably reduce the amount of energy lost. And as Jazzy09 says, as soon as you can get it to last the entire 5 minutes consistently, it's a matter of practicing to get your accuracy and precision down.
