In the rules, it says that "pre-loaded energy devices are allowed as long as they don't provide energy to propel the vehicle."
Does that mean that we can use a battery for the breaking mechanism and trigger?

"The dowel must also extend within 1.0 cm of the tracks's surface so that its front bottom edge will be the vehicle's Measurment Point for distance measurements."

the cup is 7 inches. You can do the math

I don't really understand why there is so much confusion about going over the can when you can just read the rules.
It kind of disturbs me...

Your coach is correct. You can not go "through" the can. That does not necessarily mean that he included going over the can. I still say that it would be a minor miracle of engineering if you could medal with a car going over the can.

I would suggest reading previous replies to this thread, reading the wiki page (http://scioly.org/wiki/index.php/Wheeled_Vehicle), or the image gallery of previous builds (http://gallery.scioly.org/thumbnails.php?album=10). Note some of the pictures have builds that do not turn, because of last year's rules.
