It's because
is made to prepare print documents, and so its output does not use subpixel anti-aliasing or hinting like a display font renderer would use. Thus, things do look jagged or smudged sometimes.

can you make it so every time someone enters a message on chat you hear a beep (like in AIM) and the option to turn it off too (cause it can get annoying sometimes.

The chat is a third part app. All I can really do is change a few server-related options and the colors/skin/theme.

You could use a desktop application like x-chat 2 or mIRC if you want notices anytime someone speaks.
