Yeah. Looking at State tournament results, complicated meters do not always yield better outcomes, likely because they don't have to be *that* accurate, as stated above. It's not the focus of the event. It's, what, 5%? You could neglect it completely and still perform well if you know your stuff. I'd always show up with something, but you get what I'm saying.

I used the simple one, and it didn't work at all. I ended up guessing. :/

Last year we used the one that was on the PowerPoint, and it worked great for us. We had to estimate the numbers, but we placed 3rd at States.

Hi. Does anyone know of an easy way to make a hydrometer? I am having trouble.

Last year I also made the one from the training powerpoint, but it was useless. The different percents were way too close together and you couldn't tell what number it was. Our solutions were definitely made properly but the salinometer was terrible. Can anyone explain a more accurate one, but not too complicated. If anyone knows of any modifications that can be made to the original one from the training powerpoint, to make it more accurate and separate the percents, that would also be greatly appreciated.

I feel the exact same way. I spent about an hour researching good salinometers, but they were either too complicated, store-bought, or the straw + clay thing. I've heard of people going to nationals with that though, so we must have done something wrong. But I don't know of any modifications; I'd love to hear about any.

You could try different types of clay for the salinometer with the straws...that might be helpful (?)

Well, it says modeling clay... >.> I want to use something that works, definitely.

Or you could always go the electronic option...
