I think with a general FAT, the throwing arm length over sling length should be around 1/1 or less, but only your testing with your specific trebuchet will tell the best ratio. Keep in mind that the sling length is the length from the middle of the pouch to the end of the throwing arm with the pin.

Alright, for the past 3 years in the Student Rule Book or whatever it is called, I have seen what materials the trebuchet can be made out of. What are these materials? Can I use metal for a base, or does it have to be completely out of wood? Can I use surgical tubing for the force behind the arm? I believe it will still be no metal touching the ball, correct?

Also, the rule book does not also state what kind of device the device must be. Does it absolutely have to be a trebuchet? Or can it be a catapult? Can it be an arm that swings down and hits the object off of a stump-like thing?

Since nobody else has chimed in: welcome, thanks for being a part of the forums. There are lots of tips and designs out their, but it's really not easy for anyone to respond to this type of generic question. You should check out the Storm wiki first: http://scioly.org/wiki/Storm_the_Castle which should help you. Also check out the official Storm event webpage: http://soinc.org/storm_the_castle_b

There are no explicit material restrictions this year. You can build it out of whatever you want. However the energy can ONLY come from the counterweight. Thus you can't use tubing as 'the force behind the arm'. Technically it doesn't have to be a trebuchet, but I think you'll quickly find there is a good reason pretty much everyone makes those.

Thank you. Do you happen to know the maximum distance from the launch pad the target will be placed?

You get to pick the distance. Obviously the max distance you can pick is the size of the room the event is being held in.
