Try learning some physics anyway; it was a huge component of our test. It's really not all that complicated; just learn the basic equations for relating magnetic fields to electricity. Are you sure a computer fan is the best option? They're generally designed to circulate air, not for propulsion.

Newton's Third - move air out the back and the car will move forward. Well, sure, but the shape can drastically effect efficiency as well. Of course, prop design isn't consequential until you get down to the three-four second range. The difference between a 45 second run and a 5 second run is all balance.

Of course, but a shape that is good for moving air is good for moving air, is what I am saying. It shouldn't really matter whether the assembly is on a fixed platform or not. The big problems are that fans are missing some design considerations (like weight) and have others (like quietness) that are likely to make them suboptimal.
