That would be a bit impractical, but I think its legal. North, South, Northeast, etc. worked best for me and my partner. I suggest using that method instead.
Creative suggestion, though!

So, is practicing with your partner the best thing to do with this event? And is it better to practice writing the directions or speaking them orally to your partner to get used to each other's directions and stuff?

What would the alternative be to practice?
A mixture of both oral and written. You want to reflect on each written device that you practice with so that each participant knows exactly what went wrong and how to word things clearly for next time.

A good strategy is to watch your partner when they do it, for the writer, and have the do-er think out loud. That way, you can see how they are thinking

Grab some random craft materials (Styrofoam balls, feathers, American flags, beads, Popsicle sticks) and have a parent or other friend (not you or your partner) build something random with no pattern to it. Practice and come up with a special lingo. That's all I can say... Good luck to both of you and your partners!

Basicly I use this and __ o' Clocks.
You would place this on the table, front side closest to you.

This is a good idea. When your object has multiple floors, you should use TOP and BOTTOM in order for the builder to not getconfused.

so this is my first time ever doing this event, and I have been practicing with my partner somewhat, although that's been stopped by all these snowdays lol.
So I was wondering what materials have you all gotten at competitions? We've only been able to practice with what we find, and that's just legos and knex and random paper and stuff. What's the craziest thing you've seen given at a competition?

We've had K'nex twice, and at our last tournament we had gumdrops, toothpicks, and pipe cleaners.

You can have like, marshmallows and pipecleaners. And popsicle sticks and the like. Also, paper plates, cups, etc.
