Thirded. I think that even if the max pixel space was expanded to 128 x 128, it would open up lots more possibilities.
The main reason against larger profile pictures is the amount of storage resources that images take up, and even small increases add up with the large number of users that would use larger images. Also its a fun tradition and challenge to have to work to make an avatar!

Or just use an image editor that you probably have on your computer anyway (Paint for Windows users)
