I found the book! It's called The Klutz Book of Paper Airplanes. Klutz is the company that made it.

I haven't touched it in forever. A long time ago I saw it at an airport and I was like "I need this book." Then for around a month I was obsessed with making everyone. I never managed to make them right though.

It gives the alternates something to do instead of waiting around all day. Anyway, why would you want the trial events to help determine who goes up to the next level? Most regions and states probably want to send a team to Nationals that can do the best at Nationals and represent their state. If trial events are factored in, the best possible National team might not make it.

Trial events are great for extra competition and testing possible events, but aren't the best determining factor of the top placing teams.
I'm actually inclined to agree with you on this now, especially since Car of Tomorrow- a NY trial- was run so badly at States (it involves building a maglev car, and the maglev track they had at States had the polarities switched, so all the teams that had their magnets on the right way had to switch them- and most couldn't get their cars to work afterwards- while all the teams that had them the wrong way were essentially rewarded for not reading the rules and clarifications. We appealed it, along with a couple other teams, but the appeal was denied and they counted it anyway.)

we could have used that appeal we had our car move like 1cm my friend said their track magnets were not as strong as the ones we use at our school

last year at regionals, the polarities switched so it stuck to the track. to make suse that didn't happen this year, the magnets were secured with velcro. it worked, but like u said fmtiger, the track was much weaker and we somehow managed to move our car down the track in 5 seconds with a sled.

I was just wondering when you guys start working on trial events? Our team usually isn't determined until about 2 weeks before regionals, so the alternates only have like 2 weeks to work on them.
