I would really, really like to go to the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, for something involving computer science. Or perhaps even ROTC, or Naval Academy.

Re: Where are you going for colleges?
I really want to go to Cornell University to become a veterinarian, hopefully with the use of alternate medicines (herbal and acupuncture, even). I love Cornell! The campus is great, and my grandfather used to chair the English Department there, until he retired. I can walk there from my Dad's house. It's lovely.

Re: Where are you going for colleges?
DCAD/Cornish/Carthage are my top picks right now! I'd love to major in Graphic Design or Illustration, and maybe end up teaching.
DCAD will lead me to Pratt or the Corcoran after two years... And it's student body is pretty much the size of my school class. (~500)

Re: Where are you going for colleges?
Cornell is a cool place, and ithaca is probably my favorite place in upstate NY (save a village in the catskills where I used to have family, but that's a separate matter), I grew up near syracuse for reference. A lot of people here (I go to Tufts now) like to bash it for being super competitive. I'm sure it is, but I really liked the atmosphere regardless. Honestly, a lot of people get the most out of themsleves with competition. Cornell was probably the school I was most disheartened to be denied admission to last spring.caseyotis wrote:I really want to go to Cornell University to become a veterinarian, hopefully with the use of alternate medicines (herbal and acupuncture, even). But I will say this, you're in division b. Its never too early to be looking at colleges, but don't develop a college crush early and blind yourself to other options. Not saying you're doing that, just bewarned.
And I would be very careful with alternative medicine. Its really called alternative for a reason. I've done a lot of background research on the subject (the way america treats near science fields is fascinating to me), and the alternative medicine field is filled with many lies and psuedoscience. Its a lot of hand waiving and ridiculous use of science terms like "energy" in my experience.

Herbal depends on the type, if there's an active ingredient in the herb than it can function well. But often it may be more effectively synthesized and put into a pill. This is actually how we get a lot of our medications in the first place.
And I really really hope I don't need to go through what utter crud homeopathy is on here.
This is not to say don't follow your passion, but be careful with alternative medicine. Also keep in mind that that sort of thing isn't really taught in med/vet school (granted I'm not pre-med or pre-vet, but I can't imagine that it is).
A new era has begun

Re: Where are you going for colleges?
I love competitions (like the Science Olympiad), so I think I'd fit in well. And I'm not really blinding myself to any other option. Going to Cornell would be my #1 goal in life so far, and like you, I'd be very disheartened if I were to be turned down. I get a lot of pushes from my mom to strive to be the very best, so hopefully, I can reflect that in my future application.RandomPerson wrote:Cornell is a cool place, and ithaca is probably my favorite place in upstate NY (save a village in the catskills where I used to have family, but that's a separate matter), I grew up near syracuse for reference. By alternative medicine, I'm probably not going to be entirely doing that. I would be using regular drugs that you could find at PetMeds.com or something like that. However, I have certain ties to herbs that have been with me since I was very little. It would mean a lot to me to be able to incorporate that into my future career. I also know that people in Ithaca love that kind of stuff. They're kind of hippie-like, and I'm sure the whole thing would strike them in a good way. Again, I'm not going to be completely based off of herbal capsules and ointments and poultices. That would just be part of it. At least, that's how I envision it.
I like learning about herbs outside of school, and I'm in Forestry (if that makes any difference). We'll see how much I'm able to learn, I guess.
