My students have one. The vehicle shoots out like the proverbial scalded cat, runs the 8 m speed trap in less than 2 seconds. The challenge is stopping it:)

Yup, same here. Super fast but stopping is becoming an issue.

How does a spring launcher work? (sorry for my cluelessness)

No problem! That's what we're here for. There's a really good picture on the wiki, actually, here's the link:

Has anyone also had issues with setting the distance? When I calculate how many rotations with the wing-nut method, the scrambler always goes a bit father...even when I roll it on the track for the exact distance.

It could be skidding, also if your vehicle is too light and you're using something like a spring launcher the axle with the wing nut might skid while its spinning up. Also I've always made a graph of different turns and how far it traveled, and found a linear regression for it. Even for gravity vehicle it's had a negative y-intercept.

Good point about it spinning up. Luckly I haven't had any problems with skidding and stopping yet... Thanks :)

I've just understood that there is not a solid and ideal amound of contact through the run, especially at the beginning for me. Just know that it isn't you, the majority has to test and record the distance individually.
