The first letter of every line spells out "INUYASHAKUSHO". Who should you have protected? Inuyashakusho. The last part was a cipher. Had you decoded it it would have given you a family of snakes. Inuyashakusho has a snake as his avatar.

Inuyashakusho gasps as he finds the nest of snakes in his bed just before he sleeps. Thanking his lucky stars that he found it, he realizes there is a piece of paper tacked to the nearest snake.
