Re: Water Quality B/C
Doesn't CaCO3 not even dissolve at room temperature? How could they make a solution out of a nonsoluble salt?

oh never mind... i have potable water treatment in my notes... i think it was soinc.org then. srry.quizbowl wrote:No, that's Wastewater treatment. There is a fine line between the two.sazhassan wrote:yeah. It's in the Water Quality Wiki though...

Good point.
Maybe silentsage meant SODIUM carbonate, which does dissolve.

Re: Water Quality B/C
So it IS possible for them to use something other than NaCl? But would that mean that calibration would have to be different for each salt or no.. Am I like, overthinking this...

Re: Water Quality B/C
you may be.... since our state only gave us multiple choice... which was really weird... there was no salinometer or anything else...2win wrote:So it IS possible for them to use something other than NaCl? Re: Water Quality B/C
I hope this hasn't been answered yet..
We've been having problems building a salinometer like the one they recommended we make, with a straw and clay. Every day that we test any of our salinometers (we've used 3 types of clay already) in tap water, they all float to a different line than the day before. We've even used deionized water instead of tap water to calibrate it, but we still have the same problem. Do any of you know how to fix this?

Try distilled instead of deionized water...lolliexdd wrote:I hope this hasn't been answered yet..

Re: Water Quality B/C
Okay, so when I tried making that one it just doesn't work. The soinc.org people are just wrong. A simple straw and clay model cannot be that accurate and can easily break. You need to think more sophisticated like how you can make it more accurate. Experiment to get a good salinometer.lolliexdd wrote:I hope this hasn't been answered yet..

And they basically are the same (deionized and distilled water).

Re: Water Quality B/C
My understanding is that deionized water may still have some dissolved gases and such in it.... distilled water is pure water with no gasses or other particles/substances.lolliexdd wrote:Aren't they the same?2win wrote:Try distilled instead of deionized water...
But yeah, the soinc one is pretty crappy. A team at my regionals made one last minute because they left theirs at home, and so... Yeahh, they didn't really get a good reading...
