Just the g and c major scales. You can include the other notes if you want.

So...not chromatic, just the 8-note major scale?

Suzumebachi: I think the "12 note tempered scale" part was in the rules because you do have pentatonic, quarter-step, and other strange scales.

Do you get extra points for having a larger range?

Yes, but don't go out of the "allowable" range.

Yes. (Para. 4.d.i & 4.d.iii) The range of your instrument may be as large as you wish. Up to a point, a larger range will get you more points. Exactly what that point is, is not clear.

While playing your 2 music pieces, if you play outside of the correct (allowable) range for each instrument (Para. 4.h.iv) you will be scored lower.

Edit: I have always taken the scoreable range to be the "Allowable Range".

Ah, thanks for clearing that up fleet, I thought that if your instrument simply had a range outside of the allowable range you would be marked down, even if you didn't play it.

Thank you, Gillen and Alpha Tauri :)

Now to attempt to make a whistle that's low enough...... the one that I made right now starts on G4, or whatever the G below the upper side of the C major scale is....

Considering making a flute too... but would rather not have it made out of PVC pipe...

As you may or may not know, we on the national rules committees at Science Olympiad begin work about this time every year on updating the rules for next year. We have a general policy of trying to make at least one significant change to each returning event (not all events return every year - they rotate in and out every so often), as well as trying to correct issues that required clarifications or FAQs.

The day after Nationals we (the national event supervisors, state directors, etc. etc.) always have a big meeting where we hash out issues face to face and try to come up with a near final version of the new rules. While many of us (myself included) are former competitors, in general we don't get direct input from current competitors during this process, although we do get some input from some coaches who happen to be involved at the national level.

Thus, as the Physical Sciences Committee chair, I've decided to try an experiment this year. Sounds of Music is tentatively scheduled to return next year (2011-2012 season). What specific changes would you make to the rules? I'm open to all suggestions (small and large), but can't promise we'll actually implement any of them. Feel free to post ideas here or send me a PM if you'd like.
