The government has a good site with some, too. They even divide the lists by state...how convenient.

Advertisement call is, as its name implies...for advertising. It's used when searching for a mate.

Have you guys encountered any calls at regionals yet?
Any interesting questions from the past competitions you guys can share?

Calls are entirely fair-game. They shouldn't ask you anything beyond naming the Genus or where/when you'd hear such a noise...

Yes...
T or F. This animal is referred to in Macbeth.
T or F. Species of this genus are found in Belieze.
I remember that the latter refers to Agkistrodon...I was so angry at the guy who wrote this test (it came up twice...one was T, one was F) that I wrote 'Are you Central American?' on it? I didn't get a response...

Was it a newt for the Macbeth question?

I'm getting pretty decent at advertisement calls. All aggressive calls sounds very similar to me, though. They also sound pretty similar to crocodile calls as well. I had to identify two frog calls (to species) at regionals. My whole regionals had identification to the species level anyways (they've done so for every single bio ID event I've done there) so I was somewhat prepared.

I have state in 2 weeks, and I'm really hoping for an audio section since I've basically been going to sleep to a CD of frog calls for the last month.

Could have been a newt. Could also have been a "fenny snake," whatever that is, or a toad, or a frog, or an adder, or a lizard (unspecified) ...
Also, I would be very surprised if Agkistrodon were the only genus found in Belize and the U.S.
I agree with the OP. I think this was not a good event.
