I think that the debate was not necessarily what the rules say, but rather the merits of what the rules say (specifically, the merits of excluding only goggles, not calculators, from impound in the rules).
Exactly.

"Spirit of the rules" vs. Letter of the rules"

All of thermos jugs met div C rules.
Are the identical beakers only for div C?

Identical beakers are required per rule 2a in the Division B Keep the Heat rules as well.

So it's an immediate disqualification if you don't have identical beakers? Or is it just few points deducted?

I had a lengthy post written before the board went down...it's gone now, but let's summarize:

Good question. It's not a part of the 5.b. penalties. Immediate disqualification seems extreme, so maybe it would be considered a general competition violation and a Tier 2 placement? I could see this team, if caught by a supervisor who cares, not allowed to test their device for not having the correct supplies and only allowed to take the test. The question becomes how many supervisors will sting you on this point. I don't know. I do suggest you get another 250 of whatever type just in case. If you got one, you should be able to get another.

My post was based on last years rules. The important thing is to read the rules and comply with them--Which we failed to do.
This years regional was a joke as far as interpretation of the rules of allowed materials.

Anyone notice the messed up thermo page, or is it just me?

On the wiki you mean? Yeah, a lot of pages (actually, most pages) on the wiki have messed-up formatting ever since the server issues from a couple days ago (which may still be ongoing, I don't know). I'll try to pester robotman at some point to look into it.

Well, I do have 2 250mL. It turns out one of them is Pyrex but the other one is ValueWare. However, the Pyrex beaker says it is a 250mL beaker on the side but it's not labeled up to 250mL...just up to 200mL. The ValueWare beaker, however, goes up to 250mL. What should I do? Also, is ValueWare a valid company to use?

Are they similar sized?

If they are, I would have no problem with them. I have been a KTH ES at 3 Invitationals, and 2 Regionals, but never a State championship.
