when i was first assigned this event, i was very upset at my coach b/c i hated this event, but now that i've learned so much in it, I lOVE IT!! I just want to say to anyone who may be new to this event and are doing it next year that it's really not as complicated as it may seem at first. I found the coach's manual SOOOOOOOOO helpful and would have died without it. Once you understand everything it's really fun.
Happens to most people, people take it because they have to and end up liking it. It actually makes one quite good at navigating :P

in response to your Q karatekid44, road scholar is all about topographic and highway maps, creating profiles, and making your own map.

just wondering... where do y'all get your highway maps? when i talked to people at state, some said that they just have members on the team pick some up when they're going on road trips and stop at those restroom places that have a bunch of maps. I've tried the USGS store but i've only found topo maps not highway ones.

I've either just gone to my local bookstore (Borders or Barnes and Noble) or, if I can't find them there, I've ordered them from amazon.

A travel agency like AAA is another good spot.

That's a good idea, if you know an AAA member I believe you can get a free atlas of US/Canada/Mexico as well as foldable maps for each state.

Most of the practice tests that I take need the Rand-McNally highway maps, so I don't like to go to the AAA store unless I have to.

Yeah me too. My partner and i were pretty annoyed when we were practicing b/c we wanted to do some sample questions on highway maps but all our tests were of the Rand-McNally map which we didn't have. Anyways, thanks guys for the info on where y'all get maps.

my team gets them at AAA or USGS online!!
AAA is a good source for your highway maps and USGS is a good source for your topographic maps!!

We also have some Rand McNally. It all depends on what the map requires, because sometimes maps made by other companies don't have the exact info you will need.
