Nothing, it's just that in my opinion, the french horn isn't as awesome as the ones listed above.

There was actually a pair of twins in the Wind Ensemble in my high school, one played the oboe and the other played the French horn.

Here we are, the master list. It includes all the notable instruments in the modern orchestra (and piano), except for most percussion instruments. The instruments are ranked by awesomeness, according to me.

1. Violin
2. Cello
3. Piano
4. Viola
5. Flute
6. Oboe
7. Clarinet
8. Harp
9. Double Bass
10. Timpani
11. Piccolo
12. Trumpet
13. Horn
14. Trombone
15. Tuba
16. Bass Clarinet
17. Bassoon
18. English Horn
19. Contrabassoon

Amerikestrel, you clearly are not a brass person, and you also don't seem to like bass parts that much. Violin and Tuba are about as not similar as you can get for two instruments, and cannot fairly be compared. Possibly contradicting past statements of mine, there cannot be any real best instrument because obviously, it's an opinion, but because also, many instruments just aren't that similar to each other. If you insist on making rankings of instruments, I think it would be more worthwhile to do it smaller groups, like just string instruments, or just brass instruments.

I totally agree. I can't say which is best- piano violin or oboe. I've said befor you can't compare something like violin to oboe. they're so different. as for the French horn, I do have to admit that they ARE pretty cool. just oboes are better. And also, you can't judge which is better based on how good the person how plays that instrument is.

True, if I did it in smaller groups, then in would be fairer to each individual instrument. However, my ranking is my personal opinion of which instruments are better. As you said, I am not a brass person, so that is why the brass instruments are lower on my list than strings and some woodwinds.

I would like to say that I have nothing against instruments like the tuba and the oboe. Indeed, they are all fine instruments, and they all have fine qualities. I just happen to like other instruments other instruments better (specifically strings).

Edit: Tclme_elmo, you're in Hawaii?
