Re: Water Quality B/C
Would a graduated cylinder and a balance qualify as homemade for the salinometer? We were planning on using the mass of a 100 ml sample and working backwards from there...

I'm not sure, but are you sure that's how you want to do this? The idea on soinc.org isn't that hard....numbers wrote:Would a graduated cylinder and a balance qualify as homemade for the salinometer? We were planning on using the mass of a 100 ml sample and working backwards from there...

Re: Water Quality B/C
Seeing as you have only one week you should put as much as possible. I would say put pictures of the macros, and info for every topic on part 1 and 3. Go to ]soinc.org and use the water quality handouts! Cut and paste. Cut and paste. Cut and paste. There is just too much to know so put the basics of EVERYTHING on your notes. Use textboxes to save space and max out your margins. Good luck but next time your team should try to coordinate better. The Strugglebear IV wrote:what are the most important things to put on a cheat sheet? i volunteered to do this event because nobody else would do it, and only have one week till competition HELP PLEASE![]()

Re: Water Quality B/C
Does anyone know how they're measuring the salt percentages? Like by mass or anything like that? And how much salt water are they going to give us to measure? Can we use a graduated cylinder as our salinometer?

Re: Water Quality B/C
The salt water solutions are by mass percents, e.g. 5 grams of salt per 100 grams solution would be 5% solution. For our regionals they had a large tank full of water (like one of those office water dispensers) and we just extracted as much solution as we needed. I don't know about using a graduated cylinder as your salinometer, I think it'd probably be frowned upon though. It's comparable to just using a log for towers, I don't think there's enough construction to it to make it legitimate.

Thanks for the help, and if u dont mind, i have another Q. Is the test more abt water ecology, or the macro invertebrates and other animalsptkid wrote:Seeing as you have only one week you should put as much as possible. Re: Water Quality B/C
about 30% macroinvertebrates, 30% questions relating to ecology, and 35% questions relating to the water quality factors. I think the salinometer test makes up no more than 5% of the score? The Strugglebear IV wrote:Thanks for the help, and if u dont mind, i have another Q. Re: Water Quality B/C
"The points for this testing should be approximately 5% of the total score (e.g., if a team recorded between 6.0-7.0%, they could receive 5 points out of 100)." This is under Rule Clarifications on soinc.org.cngu23 wrote: about 30% macroinvertebrates, 30% questions relating to ecology, and 35% questions relating to the water quality factors. to be honest with you guys... me and my partner brought in our salinometer for the Invitationals and regionals and we didn't even use it. I'm guessing its not used this year...
