Re: Anatomy B/C

Post by lllazar »

Hello anatomy peoples...now id like to say that im new to this event, and i really want to do it next year because of the following reasons:

1. I want to be a doctor, specifically, an oncologist, when i "grow up"...
2. Im taking anatomy and physiology next year and i want to really "get into" the subject

So. Id like to get a head start for next year. Im going to study by making a binder because ive found this is the best way for me personally to study...i will be picking up an A & P textbook at a local bookstore soon.

Wat id like to know is, what should i study? Ive looked at the wiki, id like to get a little more in depth. Now keep in mind im willing to put in time and effort.

Note: i realize that the main topic changes from time to time...just tell me the main topics theyve focused on over the years...

Thanks guys, i really appreciate it...

Edit: And about the All-Star teams, don't feel guilty about considering it...sometimes, you just want to look out for yourself. And when you have lazy team members who mostly just procrastinate till a few weeks before state/regional/invitational/watever, it gets kind of annoying, especially when your doing exceptionally. And to the "talksomethingsomething", congratz on ur medal....you deserve it :)

Hey llazar,
Well, actually I am an aspiring doctor too. Since this was my first year in Science Olympiad, I kind of studied a lot on the skeletal system. I would suggest that you buy an atlas, mark it carefully, and then study it. Buy a decent human body atlas from Borders. I would also suggest to look at all the websites they offer at soinc. Keep in mind they offer a lot of stuff to study. Start out with the handout, memorize it, understand it, and then move further.
Anatomy is a lot of note taking and memorizing but along with that its also good to have some visuals. Sometimes websites like you tube have a lot to offer when it comes to visually learning about diseases, bones, etc.

I was the kind of person who didn't know about Science Olympiad until like 4 months before the actual exam. You are lucky to know about it. So, I would say study. Take notes. Make flashcards. If you want, go in depth but then be clear with the basics. Some people know the really hard stuff but when they go to the easy regionals they don't do as well as they expected.
I would say go to the library as well and see what books they have to offer. Take a look at everything you get. This year's muscular system is still driving me crazy since I don't have enough time to memorize all the national stuff for the muscles. My suggestion : Start memorizing some stuff. Later on, you won't be freaking out like me.

Keep coming on the forum. This helps too. You can be a simple observer like me and still learn a lot.
Goodluck :) :)

Hey illazar! This was my first year at science olympiad, and I know I"m going to med school, and am currently thinking oncology as well =)

I borrowed an A&P book from a teacher and learned the endocrine system completely. LIke everything about it. Idk if they will cover it next year, but I know that it seems to be the system everyone hates and has trouble with. If you learn it first however, it seems really easy. I would recommend doing this, because most of the time you can find a partner who knows skeletal/muscular. Also prolly study basic skeleton and muscles, that way if they are covered, you can go back and study them in more detail later.

This may seem like a bizzarro childish idea, but i know people who have bought Anatomy coloring books and colored in the muscles or the bones and memorized them that way. It's actually quite effective I think.

I did that. It works, but it's a little macabre. Especially how childish the cover on some of them look.

the book I got was just the one my highschool had because we have an A&P class. it was a seventh edition Human anatomy and physiology book and one of the authors was elaine N marieb. I don't think it would really matter what book you got tho as long as u found one to study.

I have a few questions about some of the muscles, some might have already been asked before, but I just want clarification.

-On the official muscles sheet, it says “vastus intermedium.” I think it is supposed to say “Vastus intermediuS.
-This one's really vague. If no answer, that's perfectly fine. But about the Thoracolumbar fascia, I can't find too much info on it. It's just an odd muscle...

-There are many muscles that have more than one part to it. We are supposed to know the origin, insertion, and function for all of the muscles; what should we do if there are more than one part, meaning there is more than one origin? For example, biceps brachii. There are different heads, long head short head, and they all have a different origin. There's the Triceps brachii where there are three heads...all with a different origin:
Long head: Axillary border of scapula
Lateral head: Lateral and posterior surfaces of body of humerus
Medial head: Posterior surface of body of humerus below lateral head

-This kind of goes to the point above, but for the Iliopsoas there are three parts? The psoas major, psoas minor, and iliacus? What I'm basically wondering is what to learn: the specifics about the parts of the muscle, or just the muscle in whole.

-Extensor digitorum = extensor digitorum communis?

-This one I know we already discussed, but I don't remember what we said. Extensor carpi radialis, which is what it says on the sheet, well, there are two parts. The Extensor carpi radialis longus and the Extensor carpi radialis brevis...???

-I can find stuff on abductor and opponeus digiti minimi but not extensor digiti minimi, and flexor digiti minimi brevis...maybe just me.

-On the sheet it says fasciae but I know it as fascia. Is that a typo? So, Tensor fascia Lata/latae??
Thanksssss

i think the extra e is just for pluralization.
also, good question with the vastus intermedium... i always use vastus intermedius though. i think both would work.
