Just because a team(s) have gotten the top spots in a state doesnt really mean that the other teams suck. You might have more resources, more support from the school, more motivated teammates, more time, more experience, etc.

I'm sorry, but what you said just sounded really conceited. Don't take your team (or your state) for granted, seriously. I would love to have a team filled with people that actually work on their events. Especially since we have a lot of good teams in our state.

oh i dont take it for granted. our whole team works really hard. and we probably do have more resources, support, and etc.

Agreed. I would give anything for an entire team that was dedicated. We have great members who consistently place/medal, but if we want to even get a trophy at States, then we need everyone to be completely focused and working. There are some members who don't know how to study, who say they're studying a lot, but honestly ... not really. I studied by butt off for Ornithology at regionals, but still didn't medal because I didn't prepare for the right things. Sorry, but if you're going to bring three sheets and a guide to Fossils, don't even think about getting above 15th. Also, don't distract other members. There's this girl on the team who does nothing but giggle, laugh, and hug everyone. She drops fricking everything -- even the ice cream that our coach bought to celebrate the fact that we were moving on to state. Frustration to the max.

It really irritates me when I see how much work some members put in, how hopeful our coach is, and ... to not do well ... It's just devastating.

well cant you cut some bad members from the team?

We probably aren't as fortunate as your team - we can't afford to cut anyone. It's better to get 19th place in an event than to not show up at all and get 24th.

well on our team, the experienced 9th graders take over the events the 8th graders do bad in. so we end up with 5 or 6 events while some 8th graders have 1 to 3.
