Worst books

I thought Slaughterhouse Five was pretty good. What did you see in it that made you think it was preachy?

I feel like Vonnegut kept hitting me over the head with the "war is absolutely terrible" message every page. I might not have appreciated it to its fullest, but it felt like a let-down after hearing so many critics call it "one of the greatest books ever written. I didn't think it was the worst book ever, I just thought it was a disappointment.
That being said, I do like saying "So it goes" after a character in a book we're reading in English dies.

The worst book I've ever read would have to be one I was made to read in fifth grade called Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. It was pretty terrible. I also didn't care for Great Expectations, and have a general disdain for bildungsromans and any other coming-of-age stories.

Hatchet is such a trashy book, I have no idea why it's so coveted.
And I could not make it through Great Expectations. xD It's so dull.

I was actually going to pick up an Ayn Rand book today. Maybe next week. Objectivism is just impractical and I couldn't care less about it, but I think I should have either Atlas Shrugged or The Fountainhead under my belt.

I'm reading Brave New World right now, and it's really fun. Everything is backwards.

I remember having Hatchet read aloud to my class in fifth grade (don't ask, this teacher also told us that heavier objects fell faster than lighter objects and that the earth didn't spin very fast because "if it did we would feel it") and I didn't like it. It's sequel, called The River, makes it look like Shakespeare.
I've read Anthem and The Fountainhead. The Fountainhead is essentially Anthem, but with more of a complex plot. I personally enjoyed it a lot, even if I don't agree with all of Rand's ideas.
I honestly loved Brave New World, as I slowly see our world descending into Huxley's dystopia. However, the characters were just a bit inconsistent.
Great Expectations was horrid. It took up twenty pages to explain how a character did something, but then the ending with so many plot twists was like two pages.
