i guess it just all depends on the person making the test, which can really suck sometimes, cuz you could study for all the wrong things, or you study like crazy and find out it's a really easy test and you didnt need to study that hard.

On the test, how many questions are there usually on mammals like Equus and Homo neanderthalensis?

None at States. That was an easy test. On a more challenging test, maybe... actually I don't even think we had one that time either... it was all invertebrates and dinosaurs... :|

I'm not sure if this has been asked before but...

What exactly do they want us to know about insects and crustaceans?! That's even more vague then Eurypterids...
I mean, insects go into arthropoda but what SPECIFICALLY should we know? Has anybody encountered any of those two... or should we just know things about Insecta? Cause technically, crustaceans is crustacea, a subphylum... sooo.... ya.

Also, another question: my partner and I got a question on our regional that was about the rocks that fossils are formed in but we had conflicting sources so finally we had to make educated guesses. So I'll ask it here: what 3 types of rocks are fossils most likely to formed/found in? I'm pretty sure that sandstone and limestone are two of them, not so sure about the last one... we put mudstone (which is a type of sandstone) (or maybe the last one is shale?)

But as to the sorts of tests we've encountered this year: at invitationals, (cy-falls), we got a table and had 6 minutes to complete it. There were like 7-9 spaces or something and we had to put them in order from oldest to youngest (or the other way around). And then there were some other stuff we had to fill in like genus and time period.

Other questions included the parts of a trilobite, Identification of fossils and some properties, identification of the various ways that something was fossilized. It also asked about adaptations of the most RANDOM things...

Regionals was EXTREMELY easy, although it asked us the color of a certain moss while it was alive... Both tests made us define Law of Superposition. The regional test also asked for the common name so it was like... 'Identify this, what genus is it: Phacops, what is its common name: Trilobite, When did it live?: Devonian' So mostly, identification is a HUGE part but that shouldn't surprise anybody.

does anyone know what cladistics are?
and if so what is clade ?

I wikipedia-ed both of them and didn't really understand them. So if someone could explain that in 'kid-friendly' terminology, that would be great

Cladistics is basically a branching family tree, like where each organism separates. It's really just a way of classifying organisms. Basically, it means they all started at the same place and evolved later. Here's a diagram:

A clade is just a branch on the "tree"

I'm not sure about the question...it's open to interpretation, but I think I would have put coal/shale for one of my three answers.

Also, if you're looking for tests to practice with, http://www.virginiaso.com/2008_2009/eventinfo0809.html has regional tests available for download from last year.

By phylum and then we have a separate section for dinos. And other general information mixed in the middle. We're reorganizing this week.
