See the Wikipedia article mentioned in my previous entry. I have seen very good Pan Pipes made using the brass tubing sold in various sizes at hobby stores. The wide selection of diameters helps keep the length/diameter ratio at the optimum value. I'm not sure how the current required scale will relate to the size of the pipes.when I do get a sound it's accompanied by quite a bit of an airy sound

Information expressed here is solely the opinion of the author. Any similarity to that of the management or any official instrument is purely coincidental! Doing Science Olympiad since 1987!

Re: Sounds of Music C
Hi all,
I'm in the process of making my percussion instrument and I'm having trouble getting the instrument range low enough - I can't seem to produce a sound as low as C2, for example. I've been using aluminum/metal cans to hit with, and I can't seem to get the pitch below middle C
Is anyone else also having trouble matching the Percussion instrument range requirement? Do I need bigger cans or do I need to make a marimba?

So brass is not against the rules as it is not considered pure metal?fleet130 wrote:See the Wikipedia article mentioned in my previous entry. Re: Sounds of Music C
Just to clarify:
Wikipedia defines an aerophone as "any musical instrument which produces sound primarily by causing a body of air to vibrate, without the use of strings or membranes, and without the vibration of the instrument itself adding considerably to the sound" (emphasis added). Under this definition, would a Blue Man-style PVC instrument be considered an aerophone? If I understand the concept correctly, the sound is created by the vibration of air in a specifically sized column, not the vibrations of the pipe itself.
Thanks in advance for the clarification

If you are trying to make this for the "wind instrument" it wont count. Aerophone or not, it seems like a percussion instrument.Cheerwine wrote:Just to clarify:

No!!! You don't want knots in the wood!!! Pine is okay for a xylophone I guess. I'd still suggest finding a padauk dealer, it provides optimal sound.phillies413 wrote:Would this wood be good for making a xylophone? Have any of you tried a kind of pine for it?

There are loads of nice hard woods that are not so expensive and are nice looking. The harder woods can be impossible to work wtih because they are so hard that they can ruin your equipment and spew out really icky dust.

What's a little dust going to do? Scioly is serious business. Get the best materials available for your budget, a little dust doesn't matter.
