I think a good portion of the seniors leaving our team this year are going to try to stay involved in SO. I get the lucky start, the IU club, so I will probably be able to help a bit at competitions throughout the year as well. Looking forward to it.

Well, I'm just interested in knowing, for instance, how it is set up. Are there even regional competitions out there? From the research I did, it appeared not. Also, where are the state competition(s) held? It also looked like there were 2 completely separate competitions, one for each division. But most importantly, where are all the competitions held and such? I found no evidence of Harvard or MIT hosting a Science Olympiad tournament, which if you ask me, is asinine. So I would be interested in at least trying to get an invitational tourney going, since stealing the state competition probably isn't an easy task.

There are no regionals here in Massachusetts. The division B and Division C competitions are completely separate. The division B one is held at Assumption College in Worcester and the Division C one is held at the Framingham State College in Framingham. I agree that it would be awesome if Harvard or MIT hosted the state competition. The Massachusetts Science Olympiad definitely needs some work. It would be pretty cool if we had a invitational. The closest we have to that are practice meets. At a practice meet you pick two events and go take a VERY easy test on that event. It does absolutely no help what so ever.

New York is split up into around 12 regionals, cause we're huge. Divisions B and C have regionals in different schools and days (C is a week later, usually), and they have states at the same time in West Point. Because we have so many teams, we can take 2 teams to nats.

In terms of New York's Science Olympiad, I'm going to direct you to the New York State Science Olympiad website: http://newyorkscioly.org/.

There are 11 regions, each running their own competition prior to the state tournament (according to the National website, we have the most schools registered per state). Top teams from each region qualify for state competition (and the number who qualify depends on the number of schools competing and the historical strength of some teams). These all happen for Division C in early February and for B in early March.

I can't speak for the Division B State competition (as I've never been there), but C competes each year at West Point, generally in mid-March. This is an excellent experience, if only for the SciOly, but even more so because of the setting. Division B is run elsewhere and at a later date. Again, I can't comment on that location (I've never been in Division B), so I'd have to direct that elsewhere.

In terms of how things are run, that really varies depending on the region you're in. Regions with highly competitive teams tend to run most (if not all) of the events that will occur at West Point to allow for further refinement of the skills that will be needed for the later event. "Weaker" regions don't always tend this way and may only do 15 of the events. This really depends on the regional director. The state competition is run by NY SciOly and normally runs all the normal events for the year and two trial events.

well ow many teams are in a regoin? we have two regions in colorado with 30 teams per div per region

We got about 30 teams per region. Division B used to be held at St. John Fisher's college, but is now at New Paltz. Its usually in April, and otherwise, is run similarly to division C. Our regional (eastern Long Island) runs 20 of the 25 events, and as of recently, we have to choose 2 events to not enter. Trial events do count toward the whole team score, unlike nats.
