I suppose that a sand or water clock would work if you used enough water in a tower that was high enough, though it would still be hard to measure to .1 second or compensate for "loss of pressure" causing a decrease in flow rate.

So does anyone know enough to add to the wiki beyond just a simple restatement of the rules?

That doesn't need to be compensated for. As long as you add the same amount of water every run, you simply have to know what position each time will end up being. (in other words, test a LOT beforehand)

the problem with water clocks is that the rate of water released changes with the weather conditions.

Alright, so I have sort of a question on the rules. Do commercial counters only count things like stop watches and hourglasses?
Or would any device that is made commercially, that could potentially keep time (even if it's not meant to), be counted out?

Basically we're wondering if we can use test tube that already has markings on it from the factory. Not a big issue, but it never hurts to be safe. Just wondering if anyone knows. ^_^

I'm pretty sure that would be okay.

I don't really see how that's a problem. Isn't it up to the student to build an accurate device and use it correctly? I know reaction time plays a big part in this. But, timing things is necessary skill, and it will always invariably depend on human reaction.

I could see a problem if the event sup doesn't call out the time accurately, causing everybody to be off from the accepted time.

The sup doesn't call out the time. It will be prerecorded beeps or other sounds.
