I'm at 38 right now, and almost half are from this year, so I suppose it's possible.

Let's do some quick math at what this looks like. Start in fifth grade. Suppose these averages:
Invit 2med *2
Reg 3med
State 2med

*6789,10,11,12

By senior year with that 'good' average across your SO career, you'd have 72 medals. If you throw National tournament visits in, maybe it's approaching eighty. If you were a stronger competitor than those good but middling averages, especially if you did five events at tournaments wherein medaling went to sixth place (or went to more invitationals), then you'd have a ton! Of course, most folks A)don't start in fifth or sixth grade and B)don't go to Nationals or, even, State. So, for some, their totals are much smaller.

I guess that's possible if you don't have to deal with a B to C jump like most people and you somehow compete equally well every year of SciOly. But let's face it, we were all 6th graders once and only got 5 medals or something like that.

Here's another way to look at it.

Let's assume, to get 100, you're doing SO every year from 6th to 12th, a total of 7 years competing. Then, say you attend four competitions each year: two invites, one regional, and one state. 4 times 7 is 28 total competitions in your career. To get 100, you will have to medal in an average of 3.57 events per competition.

This probably sounds quite difficult. However, most people who approach 100 go to more than 2 invites per year (unless they're just insane). So, here are the averages for additional tournaments:

5 tournaments per year: 35 total tournaments, 2.86 medals per tournament
6 tournaments per year: 42 total tournaments, 2.38 medals per tournament
7 tournaments per year: 49 total tournaments, 2.04 medals per tournament

Add in the fact that, as you get more experienced, and if you're really devoted, you can get 3 or more medals at tournaments, and it's not unreasonable to think that 100-medal winners are out there. They're not dime a dozen, for sure; it takes somewhat favorable circumstances. But it's not out of the question.

For the record, I had 35 medals at 15 tournaments, for a rate of 2.33 medals per tournament. If I had gone to 6 tournaments a year (which is a lot, don't get me wrong. Especially in B, where invites were basically nonexistent in the mid-Atlantic area from 2006-2008), I probably wouldn't have gotten 100, since invites are generally more difficult than regionals (which was the bulk of my medals), but I may have been able to get 80.

What are we considering as "medaling" because most invites I've been to go to top 3, there is one that I've been to that goes to 5. Then there's regionals which for us goes to 4, and states which goes to 5...
