My understanding is that there is one double sided sheet of rules, plus the Audubon guide. also I believe that they are allowed to ask you to identify common name in addition to order and family

I agree, one guide and one notesheet. I almost wish we could have two like last year, but I'm not sure if it would be necessary anyway. I assume they can, as I have seen a few Forestry tests ask for the common names. However... More likely than not, I'm expecting to see the scientific order/family names. Correct me if I'm wrong, it's my first year with bugs :)

Does anyone know about any specific discrepancies between the NWF guide and the Audubon? I'm using the NWF for now, unless it turns out to have a lot of missing/inconsistent info.

Oh hey, it was so good to see you the other day!

I bought both as well, but what worries me is the statement in the rules about the taxonomic scheme of the Audubon being the correct information to use in competition. I haven't gotten around to it yet, but I'm planning to check for differences in classification and information. If there aren't many, I think I'll go NWF as well.

I agree, especially because I'm a total control freak. It's probably best to split up the list and devote as much of it to memory as possible, that way neither partner needs the guide for anything other than the trivia.

Hey guys I'm new to Entomolgy. I have done Rocks and Minerals, Forestry, and Ornithology. I'm a little confused with the list. I understand there are Orders and Families, but why don't some of the orders have families under them? Also within each family are we supposed to know every insect or just specific ones? Thanks for all the help :)

For most orders you will not be asked to ID past the order level. You will not be asked to ID any insect below the family level, but you could be given any member of the family as an example.

For the insects that don't have families, they will be easy enough to identify with just the order, as they either don't have many families, or they just share similar distinguishing characteristics. Some orders have families just to make it tougher for Division C. These families will have distinguishing characteristics as well, so an insect from any genus of that family will be presented.

Has anyone else used cals.ncsu.edu for bug studying? I've found it very helpful.

Thanks for the help. This is going to be a fun event!
