field guides: there isn't really a BEST field guide, it all depends on YOU or the user... (ie, you/SO may like Smithsonian, I don't really care for their rocks FG)
Audobons tend to have their photos and info in different locations, but they tend to have more info than some FG's
No matter what the experiment's result, there will always be someone eager to:(a) misinterpret it(b) fake it, or (c) believe it supports his own pet theory.

I really like Simon and Schuster's. They have lots of scientific/qualitative information. It's pretty old, but I think they might update the guides regularly.

peterson's field guide is good too. especially for organization and general information.
