Definitely not all will be used, but some used for questions like "match disease with pathogen" or "match mode of transmission with disease" stuff like that (also for disease detectives)midnightdreamer wrote:To people who've participated in this event from past years, how much of the disease list is actually in the event? Thank you!

What disease did cured ham actually have?
If 4 out of 5 people SUFFER from diarrhea...Does that mean the fifth one enjoys it?
I used to be healthy, until I took an arrow to the knee and got gangrene.

Re: Microbe Mission B/C
I have also seen very detailed questions about only one disease, but I don't know how common that is. From my experience, actual disease identification is only 1-2 stations in a 15 station event, but, it is highly variable.

How much do we need to know about microscopy?

Re: Microbe Mission B/C
If you go to soinc.org there is a pdf that's about ten pages long with everything you need to know about microscopy including a practice test

Re: Microbe Mission B/C
Anyone here found any good sites for the disease list? most of them are the same as last year, but still, I'd like some more practice. Does anyone have any good handouts over the diseases? Or know any websites?

Re: Microbe Mission B/C
Well, I found that the competition does not cover events in detail. Instead it covers things about whether it is a bacterial disease or fungal etc., basic properties of it, etc. Consequently, I found (I hear my teacher cringing here
) Wikipedia to be a great resource.
This info is basicaly based on one invitational, so it may be wrong.

Though that is the norm for invitationals I have competed at, (and in my opinion how it should be), my state competition asked very specific questions over the individual diseases, this was likewise the case when I competed in Ohio.liutony66 wrote:Well, I found that the competition does not cover events in detail. Google health was okay for last year, but i'm looking for sites that list the specific pathogen (i.e. HIV for AIDS)

Does anyone know about a microscopy source besides the ones on soinc.org?

Re: Microbe Mission B/C
when i was at state, all i did was study a little bit and make a note page based off the 2011 guide on soic.org.
my note page was double-sided and was in tiny print but readable.
basically, it had cell structure, diseases categorization, microbiology, food production, everyday microbe use, differnt microbes' differences and varieties, and a light microscope diagram.
oh yeah, and the microscope magnification formula
Yes people, everything actually fit in the paper.
