Going through the Worst Books thread and picking up on things that Z's said he hates, I got a three book list. I'm not super sure if these relate to the clue or will supremely awesomtastically lead you to the right direction, but I guess it might lead you somewhere (hopefully)? So he said that one of the worst books he ever read was Moby pigeon. Additionally, a few pages afterward, Z mentioned that he hates books with no quotation marks (something like that). His examples for this (if I'm not mistaken) are Blindness and The Road. Also, why don't we ask Z to kindly post anything that he's ever mentioned not liking? (Whoa.... that would be a long post. Hopefully, no offense taken.)

Alright, I hate to do this, but I'm going to protect myself because I haven't gotten anywhere on this clue even with the hint (there's just too many things Z dislikes... ), and I've got to leave for rehearsal in ~10 minutes.

Edit: I'll justify it this way...Z dislikes string instruments, and I play a string instrument.

That conclusion follows the hint and the final lines of the poem (I'm uncertain about the first two lines.). Therefore, the clue must refer to the first two of three characters who go through the forest.
