How does your school do tryouts for the competition team?

For anything Science Olympiad-related that might not fall under a specific event or competition.

Well actually this year we had to do a tryout; so many new people joined! I'm glad I'll outta my school next year:

1) Interest meeting and sign-ups. Those who missed the deadline were booted, sorry
2) Test for the new kids. The returning kids were placed automatically
3) Best 30 scorers on the test placed on the 2 teams.
4) What's this? it seems that everyone has to re-take the test :P
5) Everyone (including the booted kids after step 3) retake the test.
6) Best 45 people get sorted on to 3 teams.
7) What's this? it seems that there was some confusion over scores? (How did that happen???) Another test.
8) Repeat step 5, but with a new test :P
9) Best 60 ppl are chosen this time; the 4th team = alternate team
10) the remaining 45 people are sorted onto the 3 teams.
11) What's this? Regionals are finished. Time to select 15 best for States/nats
12) Careful consideration by coaches.
13) States team is announced. Method for picking students is not :P
14) What's this? Another test? This time, it's for the alternates for States
15) Everyone who was in the Regionals and is interested can take the test for a spot as an alternate
16) 1 (maybe 2) kid(s) become(s) the alternate(s).
17) What's this? Sates is done. What's this again? Someone's not going?
18) Competition for the spot. :P
19) What's this? The kid is back in?

Yeah, and more to come :P

At my school, we just started SciOly up again this year, and not many kids knew about it. So this year, we had few enough kids, so we could just let everyone join. However, I think next year might be different, now that more people know about it and are interested. :P

That tactic works well for alternates since they have to know the basics for all types of events or all events, but that tactic limits the specialization of a person's abilities. This year, all of my events are physics or engineering events, for I am a physics minded person who would not be good at biology or ecology related events. In other words, requiring people to have one of each type of event is good at the beginning of the year (It helps people find out what interests them.), but the event placement should be changed for more specialization before the regional or state tournament to allow for the people in the events to be very good at that event.

I agree. I know I could not figure out some physics or I'd be bored out of my mind if I had to do anything with wildlife, but I love Chemistry. I think once you get a good idea of events, it's best to be able to specialize in one or two 'fields'. Plus, you can use some info from some events that might crossover.

What high school do the kids from there end up going to?

We just kinda do whoever wants to do what does it. My friend was with me when we were looking for people for Forensics, and she said it sounded cool. And on to the team she went. More or less forced.
