Don't worry about it. At BCMS, we never really have any people to "teach" students about events. It's totally self study. And we still did pretty well last year! :D
I think you teaching us about all of your events doesn't count as self studying. ;)

Well we all made use of the resources available to us, and that didn't involve teachers :P

You shoudln't need to determine the exact disease that they are talking about just based on evidence and symptoms. They will usually tell you straight off what the disease is anyway. If anything, they might give you a table of diseases and symptoms and you have to match the correct disease with the symptoms they gave. However, some supervisors may ask you something like that, even though they're not supposed to, so maybe just review some diseases if you want. You can also put that on your cheat sheet.

I would say, though, that this year you should know something about gastroenteritis. It is very likely to show up, and might not be explained because it is so commonly associated with food-borne illness. I also think you should know about endotoxins and exotoxins.

I think you should probably start with learning the main ones. Under the main soinc page for Disease Detectives, there is a link to the CDC page of Foodborne Illness. Under that link, it talks about main foodborne illnesses. Definitely know those, be familiar with them, know how they are transmitted, common symptoms, etc. Once you have that, then you can start looking at the other diseases under the link you have. Personally, for Invitationals, you should be able to get by just knowing the basic diseases. Even for State and Nationals, I highly doubt they would give some totally unknown disease- the scenario(s) should be on pretty familiar diseases. If they did give you a matching part or something on the test, it would be pretty common diseases, it wouldn't be something that you've never heard of.
