I interpret the specification to apply to only the tip (or front) of the rocket. Both of your examples would be OK as long as the tip of the rocket doesn't touch the bottle cap.

While the arrangement below technically complies with the specification, it may get you in trouble!

If you are referring to the backslider design where the PP ball is attached by a string and comes off at apogee, that would not be allowed as the rocket changes shape.

The bottle cap is just a unit of measure that is easy to use and standard

I gather from the posted comments that the official rules for 2011 are out.

Our team will not get its rule books until mid-October.

Can someone please confirm that we are building with 2L bottles this year and that deployable recovery systems are prohibited for 2011?

Also, are there any overall length restrictions?

Have the fin placement restrictions changed from 2010 Egg - O - Naut?

This will allow us to get started with our design and testing.

Thanks.

fleet130 wrote:Here's a new twist: Para. 3.g "Rockets may not change shape or deploy any type of recovery system."

This would seem to limit rockets to some type of backslider/glider.

Other parameters:
.....1. 1 or 2 rockets
.....2. 2-liter bottle
.....3. Blunt nose/minimum radius
.....4. 75psi
.....5. May not change shape
some of your questions are answered there....most people don't have their rules yet I don't think fleet just got his fast

2L bottles, no recovery system. I don't see any length restrictions. Fins must be at least 5 cm above the bottle's opening (I don't know if this is a change).

I just got my rules a few minutes ago. :D

I ordered them from the Science Olympiad Web Store on the 8th of August and got them a few days ago. If you wait to get your team copy through regular distribution channels, it can take quite some time depending on what state/region you are in.

Since I assume you are just talking about covering over the cracks along where you join bottles or other parts. I don't see where it is disallowed, as long as you stay within the allowed materials
