What does the asterisk before some birds on the Official List mean? I know in Fossils it means it will only be included in state and national contests...

Wrong. Read rule 2a.

Seriously, please read the rules. Don't rely on hearsay, or what your coach told you the rules were, or some powerpoint summary of the rules that someone made.

You can download a copy of the rules form soinc.org at zero cost. If you don't have a copy of the rules, you should do this.

So per the official rules, you may have a 2" binder, AND a field guide, AND a bird list.

It is, of course, possible that your state has changed the rules for its own competitions (meaning regionals / states, and maybe your local invitationals will follow the state rules), and in that case, your state SO website should have the changes. Just seen that you're in IL - IL doesn't do this. SO just go with the national rules.

But please, please - for all your events - get a copy of the rules, read them, and understand them. There's no need to rely on word of mouth.

So this is my first time on an ID event, and I was wondering if you guys find it more efficient to organize your binder alphabetically by bird, or by order/family.

Do it by order of the list, and look at the list while trying to find a bird. Doing it alphabetically would just be a waste of time

I found it very easy to find stuff in the binder first by organizing it by order, and then within the order alphabetically by common name. It eliminates the task of having to refer to the bird list and then the binder.
