I agree. But this is my mom's computer and she really doesn't know anything about computers. She thinks getting a different browser is going to destroy the computer

Re: New Google Search Box
... so, by extension, Outlook IS e-mail. And I wouldn't use Outlook: Thunderbird is much, much better, and it's free.andrewwski wrote:Outlook is a means by which to access email.

Re: New Google Search Box
Correct...which is why the aforementioned post didn't make any sense.
Thunderbird isn't bad, I like some things about it, but IMO Outlook 07 is still much better. Not only is it an email program, but it has excellent calendar and tasks features that can be easily synced with mobile devices. Thunderbird can accomplish it with extensions, but Outlook is much better featured and streamlined.

Re: New Google Search Box
I tried Thunderbird, but it didn't work since I can't figure out my SMTP server.

Re: New Google Search Box
If you use Gmail, it should have a built-in function. Also, if you want to find your e-mail provider's SMTP, you should just look up <insert name here> mail server.

Re: New Google Search Box
Gmail is smtp.google.com.
Both Outlook and Thunderbird can auto-discover the settings, but I don't recommend it as you may want to use different ones. For example, I like to use Gmail with IMAP, default is POP when set up automatically.
You don't actually need to use your mail provider's SMTP server to send mail though, any SMTP server that you have an account on is fine. For example, my university blocks all outgoing servers besides smtp.buffalo.edu. So I set my SMTP server to that and put in my login details for that, and I can still send from my Gmail account.
