Often NorCal has 4 per regional, so that might well be the case. Considering the margins and using Mountain View's second team as a baseline, Lynbrook might have been competitive for top 15 at Golden Gate.

Yes, those are the 4 teams that qualified for States. And yes, Lynbrook is a very good up and coming team.

Ya NorCal is 7 regions, 4 teams per division per region for 28 each at State. There are three regions that don't typically have really high placers but, them's the rules. (Last year, Stanislaus-Tulare-Fresno took the bottom 12 spots at States in C, and Turlock from Stanislaus was the high in B at 13th).

I'd be willing to put CA's overall top five up against pretty much any other state in B or C. Shame we'll never send more than two.
In B, that'd probably be five of Kennedy-Churchill-Miller-Kraemer-Jeffrey Trail-Oak Valley.
In C, that'd probably be five of Troy-Mira Loma-Mountain View and then Albany-Palo Alto-whoever is 2nd/3rd behind Troy.
We should propose some sort of super-state-invitational where all the biggest powerhouses can go.

Seems like an interesting system to have 4 teams per region regardless of region size, but I guess equal representation has its perks. I think you can probably modify a proportional distribution method to force a minimum number of teams per region, but spots will always be limited in a difficult state when there's only 28 to go around. How many teams overall do those three lower-performing regions have?

As for a super-state invitational, it would be an interesting idea but likely a logistical nightmare unless you can get all teams to buy in. Without nationals spots to go around (which is off the table), it would be tough to make it much different from the major invitationals we are already seeing.

I tried some poking around, on https://statescioly.org/norcal-fresno/Reg/School we see 13 schools / 19 teams in B, 13 schools / 20 teams in C. With 4 schools moving on, that's about a 1 in 3 chance. Tulare http://www.tcoe.org/ScienceOlympiad/Res ... .htm#DivBC only releases the top four in each event and top four teams moving on, but numbers indicate maybe 17 teams in B and 16 in C. Stanislaus https://www.stancoe.org/division/admini ... d-regional is similar but to top 5.

I don't see any info on San Joaquin, which does have some decent teams (Wicklund, Tokay, Mountain House...)
