But I don't see what's bad about using abbreviations. If your partner already knows what they mean, it could save you a lot of time.
There's nothing wrong with using abbreviations, you just have to define them, either at the beginning or at the first usage. All I was saying was that if your terms aren't abbreviations, they don't have to be defined; if they are abbreviations, they do have to be defined.

I'm just wondering, if you have legos, then are you allowed to use coordinate points? My partner and I have legos for our challenge at regionals(Jan.7th), and we are testing different types of codes... We are planning to put break the base, if any, in our mind, to make a coordinate plane, from the middle, so that it is symmetrical on both sides. Then we put it into coordinate points. Just making sure this is legal in the competion.

Thanks,

I believe that this is legal if you say, the first time you mention a coordinate, something like "(x,y)- x right and y up from the center of the base." After that, you could just say your coordinates without the explanation. That would count as defining your abbreviation at first use.
However, don't necessarily expect there to be a base for Lego constructions. Usually they're free-standing, in which case that system wouldn't be so useful. It's a good idea, I just haven't seen many- if any- Lego WIDIs in competition that used a base.

I am new to it this year but my partner isn't...
I think it might be the most fun event this year for division B!
I am so happy that I was chosen to be on it..
What are your guys favorite things to build with?
I personally like legos and coins haha :]

I love WIDI too, although a lot of my teammates think I'm insane for that  . I don't know that I have a favorite material, but my partner- ex-partner, really- and I have a long-standing grudge against pipe cleaners. Those thigs are evil.
Are you the writer or the doer?

I now have this grudge against pipe cleaners. Boyceville device was insane. pipe cleaners, animal crackers, starbursts, candy canes, gah. so much orientation stuff it was really frustrating.

The lady said at the end it was really hard so we would know what to expect at nationals. i couldnt help but correct her in that last year's nats device was k'nex

Haha Regional WIDIs tend to be the worst. I try to avoid them whenever possible (I don't know about your region, but in ELI C Division you can drop two of the twenty events that are run; WIDI is generally one of ours). I love the event, but I hate it when they make it impossible (our region tends to have WIDIs that are impossible not even because they're difficult, but for stupid reasons like the Doer being unable to get the object to stay together because it isn't actually possible for it to stay together, since the writer's model was glued together).

Yeah! the animal crackers were forced into a styrofoam board. some were glues and I asked her if i should write "glue it in" and she said no, they should be able to do it without glue....meh. ahh my brain still hurts from all the orientation. you had to pick the right animal, find the right spot, make sure the head was facing the right way (NW, NE, etc)..very exhausting!

Well, at least you can drop an event. Us in PA are forced to do each event to count for our score, and it doesn't matter if an event is badly put together. Although I don't believe our region has particularly bad WIDI structures, at least I haven't heard it from my teammates. I might do it this year so I'll find out, I suppose.
