Let's get this thread rolling again... What sized axles are people using? I've been using 1/4in, but I'm considering moving down to save weight. Also, has anyone found light threaded rods that don't bend a lot?

This might be a little heavier than nylon, but they do sell hollow threaded rod, which will definitely be stiffer. Here's a link: http://www.mylampparts.com/Products/2-F ... 04155.aspx

I have to do more research on this, but maybe you can get a plastic rod? My brother did something like mousetrap over the summer and they used a plastic rod. I’ll send a link when I can find it.

Also, do you guys know about the foamy glue? How do I get rid of that on wood?

Would nylon not work? Is strength and rigidity the issue there?
(I ask this not as a challenge but because I genuinely don't know)

Nylon would work, but it would wear out over time and if you plan on doing significant amounts of testing, that would be bad. Yes you want the axle to be stiff and stay straight or you will introduce friction into the wingnut. Attaching wheels will be easier with a metal axle than a plastic one.

The rules to me did not make this quite clear, but are u allowed to roll the vehicle on the track before the run to calibrate it?
