From my experience these are never a guarantee, especially the first point :p

At our regional competition, Rocks and Minerals (a timed station event) had stations that weren't timed. There were 50 minutes for 10+ stations, so we finished 20 minutes early and left. Also, there was an error in the test. It listed "hornblende" as a metamorphic rock, when in reality it is a mineral. We asked the ES, and she said it should have been "hornfels," a metamorphic rock ( ). So that question was exempted for all participants.

At our state competition, the Rocks and Minerals test wasn't good. The test was all identification, with information questions sprinkled lightly throughout stations. We didn't really have to use our binder, and we still came out first. :D

I know of a bunch but here is a kind of funny one.
At states in MN this year, even though hovercraft was a trial, the written test was around 6 questions long, 2 questions that were 1 point, 2 that were 5, and there was 2 that were around 20 pts. The funny part was that it said at the top, "Science Olympiad Hovercraft Written Test 2007".

This happened at the NYS comp in 2017. This is so funny, so in wind power once we had a fire drill and we left the building only like 10 minutes into the event. We were fine, everything was just pushed back a half an hour. I can just imagine those towers and scramblers and mission possibles, especially the towers, just imagine you loading the bucket with sand and all of a sudden the fire alarm goes off. Still glad I did towers earlier that day

At the Kansas State tournament, Microbe Mission was a complete and utter failure. A substitute proctor arrived 15 minutes late because the original one left last minute on a trip. As a result the stations weren't timed properly, the stations had not been set up and the entire event was generally chaotic for the entire duration of 50 minutes. Many of the teams (including my partner) had to leave to make it to other events. On the other hand we still got first place :).

In addition, the results arrived 90 minutes late.

Ecology for Div. B in Indiana was made a trial because they took too many questions from last years Green Generation test. I got 9th anyway so I didn't mind.
