Re: Pentathalon
Sooooo.
Has anyone else here competed in Pentathlon? I'd really like to know what "challenges" they were given

Re: Pentathalon
No offense, but I completely disagree with the first part of your statement. Running to your events has nothing at all to do with sports. Being able to play sports has nothing at all to do with SCIENCE!!!sadistic_cottoncandy wrote:i love sports. and i really don't agree with the statement "sports have nothing to do with scioly." people run to their events don't they? and the fact that exercising isn't part of science....im not even going to go there right now. if you want a really good debate for pentathlon, go to the Society for the Discontinuation of Pentathlon thread. leave this thread for actual study for the event.

Re: Pentathalon
hahaha i actually do sound like that...thats the funny part! but im not obnoxious or rude (my teammate was joking....james?)....besides this entire thing was a joke. i dont even participate in the event, but its just that no matter how u place in other competitions, your score will not always be consistent becuz it is so hard to prepare for...and i feel that its kinda of a "childish" event...but w.e. u have your opinions so thats fine
top 4 events i want:
1. cell bio
2. anatomy
3. ecology
4. forensics

again. Society for the Discontinuation of Pentathlon.
anyway....what are some of the areas that are most tested at your guys' competitions? we've been tested on earth science and anatomy stuff at all of our comps so far. usually, it's something like labeling the parts of the heart, or matching a description of a volcano to a picture.

From what I've heard/experienced
Earth Science, with different types of rocks is huge.
So is some chemistry, with pH's and things.

Re: Pentathalon
Yeah, from what I've heard, it seems that nearly every competition has a station where you have to sort rocks into igneous/metamorphic/sedimentary.

yeah i did that one at NY states-it was really easyPhenylethylamine wrote:Yeah, from what I've heard, it seems that nearly every competition has a station where you have to sort rocks into igneous/metamorphic/sedimentary.
at NY states they had
sort the spcae objects from smallest to largest
place the elements into solid, liquid or gas
sort the rocks into sedimentary/metamorphic/igneous
and i don't know the last one ill have to ask the kid who did that station

Re: Pentathalon
fli754 stated the whole thing several pages ago.
fli754 wrote:I competed in the Pentathlon at states and it wasn't so bad.
Our individual physical activities were:
Running a certain distance, skipping a certain distance, and jumping past a line. Every 10th of a second would get chopped off our total time for every 10 cm jumped past the line.
Throwing a frisbee at an object and knocking it over. Apparently our teammate failed at throwing frisbees![]()
Passing an obstacle course, which was dribbling a basket ball 10 times, jumping rope 22 times, crawling under two chairs with a stick inbetween, and running between cones.
Shooting a soccer ball through two cones with a whiffleball bat.
Then our academic activities were:
Placing three magnets on a pole and have none of them touch each other, so it was really just getting two of the same polarities facing each other.
Arranging astronomical objects in size from smallest to greatest.
Identifying what rock is sedimentary, igneous, or metamorphic.
Matching up elements with their respective forms; solid, liquid, gas.
Then our final task was to place seed bags in pots with a name on it, VEGETABLE, FLOWER, or PLANT. It was really a matter of speed and knowing what choices you have left. Our team got 9th, so we were still happy.
