Oops, you're right, Z. It should be G2 to G3, not C4 to C5. I mixed up the octaves for wind and percussion. >.<

zyzzyva98 wrote:Ok, that's very interesting. It has to fit in the required octave, and it looks like it could, so all you have to do is play all the notes in order. But you won't get any bonus points.

Maybe you could consider building a second drum larger or smaller than this one to get those extra notes?
As much as I'd like to, it's a bit too late for that now. Maybe if my school advances to states though, I might do just that.

You think I can get past regional with enough notes to play the required song and another song of my choice?

is any internet resource that can tell me exact lengths the pipes need to be?
Don't know where to find it on the internet, but the equation is in the book "Music, Physics and Engineering [Paperback]" by Harry F. Olson. Check your library to see if they have a copy. There is some info in the Pan Flute article on WikiPedia.

Is this equation correct?

TL = (S/F) / 4

TL = Theoretical length

S = Speed of sound

F = Frequency

My regional isn't running this event as far as I know, but I had the idea to use cans (like Arizona iced tea and Peace Tea-sized) filled with water as my percussion instrument and calling it a Can-o-phone :lol: . How disastrous would you say these two ideas are?

If you can get them to the right amount (you'd probably have to fill them right before the event starts) I don't see it being that much of a problem, especially if you're short on time.

Yeah, I plan on measuring out the exact amounts of water needed for the pitches and bringing a measuring cup and jug of water to competition. I just hope I don't have another event directly before it :lol: I still haven't figured out how to mount the cans (planning on playing the sides, having them stand upright) and whether or not to construct a resonator of some sort.

So I've been working and I have completed a set of three-note panpipes (made out of pvc) and I can play Hot Cross Buns. I just wish it was that simple. :lol:

High notes are simple enough, but I'm having quite a bit of trouble getting lower notes to sound clearly. (when I do get a sound it's accompanied by quite a bit of an airy sound).
