I realized what the discord and scioly.org forums are good for now. Discord's good for fooling around and talking about results in the moment. On scioly.org you can actually save information and it's better for asking about events. Each serves their purpose but it's frustrating that the forums look really dead at times.

Yeah, there is a trend in too many communities I've been a part of toward data storage in Discord, which being unindexable and reliant on the whims of a proprietary host is a bit of a problem long-term.

Def agree with this statement. I also like that there is no requirement to make yet another account to even lurk on the forums, unlike the Discord server. (Yes, Discord does have server previews, but you still need a Discord account, that feature's for community servers iirc, and the scioly.org server does have a confirmation step)

That being said, I wish there was more activity in the states subforum. On the forums, a lot of information and results were exchanged on state topics, but activity has been steadily decreasing year over year to almost zero since 2021.

The same can be said for the question marathon subforum. I actually enjoyed casually browsing and occasionally answering and asking questions.

Whoa! Haven't seen Nydauron and Unome in a while. I mean you guys don't know me but I used to lurk in forums around 2021 and read archives, haha.

Discord is beneficial short-term for fast communication, but when people use it for information storage, it's terrible long-term. I'm just about done preaching about this on the servers, because people get tired of it and no one listens. It's a never-ending loop of joining servers, asking questions that no one but you sees the answer to(or not, if the message gets buried under 2 minutes of another conversation), and then seeing another person join and ask the same question.

Faster communication isn't better, but apparently no one realizes that. I guess it doesn't matter to them, as long as it benefits them short-term. If it weren't for the Flight threads(which are dead now because Discord again) I probably wouldn't use this website anymore.

Hi! Glad to meet you. Yeah, I tend to do a fair bit of lurking. ;)

Yeah ... it feels like the "leading the horse to the water, get you can't make it drink it" scenario. The growing consumption of short-formed content (aside from Discord or the server) also probably has a role in affecting this younger demographic.

A similar issue exists in another smaller community (non-Scioly related) that I've recently lurked that also has a forum (like 2 decades of posts) and a Discord (created in late 2016): there's not that much activity on the forums nowadays, but any new tools and topics I'm trying to search for are in Discord messages.

The idea of convenience of service and separation of information/community is definitely a double-edged sword.

We are a community server so that part is a non-issue but the confirmation step would definitely put a hamper on that. I agree with your point about state subforums--it feels like a lot of results have been lost to time because people just aren't posting them on the forums like they used to. Very unfortunate there.
