My team stinks. We had an invitational at our school a couple weeks ago and I think we set the record for least points ever in a single event. We got like -770 or something like that.

Haha at regionals ours got totally jacked up and we only got 400 out of 800 points/:

Do the mousetraps have to be placed 90 degrees from each other or 90 degrees from the center?

90 degrees from each other, from the center. Imagine drawing a line from each mousetrap to the center of the contraption. You should have four 90 degree angles. Or, imagine a compass. Put one mousetrap at North, one at south, one at East, and one at West. But its worth only 19 points, so its not THAT big of a deal, but still try to get your mousetraps in the right place. My report from Indiana States:
Wow...there's a thousand ways to complete the task.
Please, please, please, don't use dominoes. We somehow managed to have zero accidents knocking down the domino arrangements that were everywhere, but I count that as something of a miracle.
Remember to measure to the inside edge of the mousetrap when setting up. A number of teams had the distance dialed in to the center of the traps and they had to make adjustments as best they could.

Also, one more thing... the rules say that any part of the device may not become an unshielded projectile at any time... if we are using marbles and we put a sort of box around the trap, would it be shielded? Do the judges need to see the mousetraps?

I would only consider something to be a projectile if it is being propelled somehow, not simply falling. If the trap somehow launches a marble, that would be a projectile.

The judges do need to be able to see the mousetraps to determine the order in which they are set off. You could put a box around each trap to shield it, yeah, but the top or whole thing would have to be clear so that the judge can see when it trips without any trouble.

There was a marble-driven device right next to a dominoes on and we had to set up a barricade out of yardsticks to keep any from rolling into the other carefully laid dominoes. If you are going to use marbles, it would be best to have some containment around the whole device just to keep any from rolling out (just a cardboard barrier or something).

That is a good idea I'll have to do that. Our marbles are dropping onto the mousetrap, which often propels them, so a box made of cellophane should do the trick. The mousetraps are taped to blocks of wood so we should be good there.
