Ok I agree with you on that; asking people to memorize that type of info is definitely going too farstenopushispidus wrote: ↑May 12th, 2021, 1:33 pmyeah but like the bonds and groups and valence electrons and all that stuff??AstroClarinet wrote: ↑May 12th, 2021, 1:32 pmI haven't had to memorize the periodic table yet but memorizing the symbols for each element is pretty usefulstenopushispidus wrote: ↑May 11th, 2021, 11:52 am also, i don’t understand: if mendeleev made the periodic table to group elements according to their properties so it would be easier to know them, then why do chemistry teachers make us memorize them all?? isn’t the point of the periodic table so that you don’t have to memorize it all and the elements are ordered according to properties??

physics is like the infinite jest of science. most people don’t care to read beyond the first chapter, it’s far too complicated and long, and if you understand it you’ve probably ascended beyond this astral plane.
marine ecology is the Starbucks of science. it’s awesome and so are otters.
I don't think it's very common practice for students to memorize it, but rather, people get used to seeing it, and they remember things that way.stenopushispidus wrote: ↑May 11th, 2021, 11:52 am also, i don’t understand: if mendeleev made the periodic table to group elements according to their properties so it would be easier to know them, then why do chemistry teachers make us memorize them all?? isn’t the point of the periodic table so that you don’t have to memorize it all and the elements are ordered according to properties??
Because I know for certain that you're not joking about this, I'd highly recommend Sam Kean's The Disappearing Spoon. Chemistry isn't my forte but it's a really good read, especially for people who don't want to go into chemistry :)stenopushispidus wrote: ↑May 12th, 2021, 1:32 pm chemistry is the the scarlet letter of science. it’s unnecessarily complicated and boring, the vast majority of people hate it, and very few people remember anything about it after high school/college other than ‘it sucked’

OMG YESSSSSSSS it's such a good book!! There are lots of good science books that cater to a general audience, but honestly The Disappearing Spoon takes the cake for most interesting and down to Earththegroundsloth wrote: ↑May 14th, 2021, 6:54 am The Disappearing Spoon is seriously one of my favorite nonfiction books, I would lend anyone who wants to read it my copy but there are some geographical complications ]![]()
