Discovered my computer performance problems the past week might be my hard drive failing. Now the question is what do I want to spend on a laptop that turns 7 this summer. I've been considering building a desktop for years now, but this is hardly a convenient time to build. Though I could easily keep using the drive for extra storage after the rest of the laptop dies.

Come to the dark side of PC building.

Then again NVIDIA is launching a new graphics card in late February, and good prices on those are very VERY hard to come by, except at launch, so contrary, it might actually be a good time to build one. :p

I "splurged" for the SSD. I wish I got this years ago... (had considered it, but I was always indecisive on my future computer plans).

I will say, given that the prices have considerably dropped since 5 years ago, you've def been missing out on those fast boot times.

Hope you've gotta an image of that hard drive!

Right now, it is sort of an awkward time to build a new PC just because of the shortages on the new Ryzen 5000s and RTX 3000s. That being said, it's always a good idea to consider second-hand parts a year old (e.g. Ryzen 3600 paired with an RTX 2060 or a GTX 1660). I personally have found some reasonable offers on second-hand sites compared to listings that scalpers are pricing these at.

I will say, in the long term, building a machine should last you a while. Given that you were using a single laptop as your daily driver for 7 years, I'd imagine you'd get a lot out of the modularity and upgradability of a desktop.

I finally got around to hooking up my MOTs, and I now have a foot-tall Jacob's Ladder, along with a working knowledge of the locations of every fuse and breaker on one of our circuits.

The bowling alley played Stacy's Mom tonight, and none of us there had heard it in years.

A good source for cheap SATA HDDs is old DVRs. I salvaged 7 of 'em for 50 cents and about 5 minutes each a few weeks ago, ranging from mostly 500 GB laptop-sized ones to a 2 terabyte drive.

The Lord of Space has instructed me to make a comment here as to the dimension we are currently in. I would say we're somewhere between the present and the future, but he needs to know where. I've created a 3 dimensional way to analyze 5 dimensional space so that way you all can comprehend that of which realms the gods dwell in.

Oh you only needed the dimension we're in? Ok I'll stop rambling.

We're nowhere, but everywhere at once. Interstellar.
