Based on the rules the device technically needs to say "the end" and start with removing a magnet in order to count for more than participation points. The rules state that the device MUST start by removing a magnet and end by saying "the end" so unfortunately a well read ES would not let a device in which you just remove a magnet count.Kyanite wrote:I 3D printed a 1cm by 1 cm box that had a magnet hanging on one side holding up a watch battery got a ton of size points, one battery bonus and the start action. We're pretty competitive when it comes to other events, but if we don't do this event at all, it'll severely lower our chances at regionals.
We live in PA, so we still have roughly 2 months before our regional competition. I think if we start now, we could at least HAVE a device. Does anyone have any advice on where to start or how to make it less scary for the kids to approach? It seems like a cool event, but my kids won't go anywhere near it. At this point, I just want a decent device to make sure this event doesn't make us tank at regionals. Like I said, we're a pretty competitive team, so I think we could make up for a mediocre MP score, but definitely not for a no-show.

Our current design doesn’t have all 12 tasks but I think if I were to rebuilt it I wouldnt get more than 90 bonus size points.. one of our tasks is too big..

Focus on reducing the size of that one task?Ashernoel wrote:Our current design doesn’t have all 12 tasks but I think if I were to rebuilt it I wouldnt get more than 90 bonus size points.. one of our tasks is too big..

Re: Mission Possible C
Why would you consider that participation? I could see tier 2 for construction violations, but just for not saying "the end" shouldn't reduce a device to participation based on my reading. The argument could come down to "failed to operate autonomously after starting" though, and having no action may not satisfy that requirement.ScottMaurer19 wrote:Based on the rules the device technically needs to say "the end" and start with removing a magnet in order to count for more than participation points. 3 e/g (if there is no final action than no action can contribute to it)

I caught that the other day while helping to build one. It is directly stated but grouped in with other items in such a way that it is hard to notice.Kyanite wrote:I didnt have the rulebook with me I cant find where I saved it. And thanks for pointing that out.ScottMaurer19 wrote:3 bKyanite wrote:

I would quote it but forum rules say we aren't supposed to do that too much

Re: Mission Possible C
I have a question regarding the use of a sensor. In my current design, I use a TMP36 sensor connected to an Arduino to record a decrease in temperature during a certain chemical reaction. When the sensor records a certain temperature drop, the Arduino turns on a speaker which serves as the final action. The reaction takes several minutes for the temperature change. I've used this design at several invitationals, and the event supervisors have never brought up that this might be against the rules. Based on your interpretation of the rules, would this be a construction violation?
