"Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great; for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you." Matthew 5:11-12

I have no regrets.

Franklin the good citizen

Established the first public library
Published Poor Richard's almanac to help teach others
Offered to pay for all of the expense of the Boston tea party
Attempted to become more humble in his conversations with others.
Nearly published a book in virtue- but used the habits in his own life.
Invented countless useful inventions like bifocals and the lightning rod which have benefited society- and still do today.
Helped write and edit the Declaration of Independence.

I feel that Benjamin Franklin's plans to achieve moral perfection were good. He understood that he had some virtues to work on in his life, and strived to work on them, which I admire in him. I admired how he chose one week to specifically work on one virtue, and made sure to write it down when he made a mistake. I think it would be great if we could all follow his example, because it isn't a bad idea to take a look at yourself and try to improve in different areas.

I think that Benjamin Franklin's goals were realistic. He never directly said, "I want to be the most perfect person ever," he just knew he would try to improve. He strived for perfection, but didn't fuss over small little mistakes each time he made one. Everyone wants to do their best, but we can't all make it to perfection. Benjamin Franklin understood that if you wanted to improve in something, you'd have to work to get there, not just expect yourself to be better overnight.

I think that Benjamin Franklin meant for "order" to be his way of expressing organization or structure in one's life. For example, he tried making the schedule of each hour of his day, so that everything he did would have its own time-slot and he would be able to put his day into order. I think that order could also be represented as being able to have a clear mind without any scattered thoughts or distractions, so that you can focus on one task at a time or not have clouded thoughts. I think that he had the hardest time with this virtue because the schedule that he made for himself was not realistic. He didn't leave much time for spontaneous visits from people, unexpected mix-ups in time, or random errors, which can mess-up a schedule.

Franklin added humility to his list because a friend of his pointed out that he occasionally came across as prideful when he was talking, and Franklin wanted to improve that part of himself and become more humble. This helped him in many ways during conversation, because now when he did not agree with a person he re-phrased his disagreement in a more humble and calm way, rather than being boating and prideful. Usually this resulted in the mutual understanding of both people, and more friendly discussion. Franklin stated that talking with more humility also avoided extreme embarrassment when it turned out that he was wrong, which sometimes happened.

1. Franklin attributes his success in life to the virtues he has practiced. To which virtues does he attribute the following—long life and good health? his wealth? the confidence of his countrymen?
2.
3. 4. Why did Franklin feel he needed to achieve moral perfection?

5. What was Franklin’s reason for concentrating on one virtue at a time? Briefly describe his “little book” and how he used it to focus his attention.

I also really liked that book! Out of curiosity, who is your favorite character? Mine's Atticus.
