The (no longer) Increasingly Inaccurately Named Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Trilogy is the best (BTW, has anyone else played the Infocom text-based game? It's online, if you liked the books, google it- Adams wrote all the text of it); Douglas Adams is a genius (I also loved Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency).
Did you hear that Eoin Colfer is writing a 6th Hitchhiker's book?! I love some of Colfer's books, but no matter how good he is, you just can't match Adams. I guess if SOMEONE had to write a sequel, he's the best I can think of, but still, it rubs me the wrong way...

Anything by Tamora Pierce, Scott Westerfeld, or E.L. Konigsburg gets my vote, too.

Other favorites:
Empress of the World by Sarah Ryan
The Gate to Women's Country (argh, I forget the author's name, and I'm too lazy to go get the book and check)
The Riddlemaster of Hed trilogy by Patricia McKillip
On Food and Cooking: The Science and Lore of the Kitchen by Harold McGee (yes, a food science book. It's actually quite famous... among food scientists... yeah...)

Haha, I love the Hitchhiker's series. It's such a unique humor, but it's so entertaining. And though I think that Colfer is a decent author, he will probably butcher the next hitchhiker's book if he writes it.
Im also a fan of Tamora Pierce and E.L. Konigsburg.

Has anyone else noticed that Paolini writes like he's got a high school English teacher over his shoulder? "Make sure to put two adjectives for every noun! Use a thesaurus!" Don't get me wrong, I liked the books pretty well, but the fact that his characters never send a letter, they always send a 'missive'- that kind of clinched it for me. Repetition isn't any better just because the word is less well-known; in fact, it's worse, because it draws your focus in a way that the word 'letter' never would.

No offense, but any average reader looking for an entertaining story probably wouldn't even notice something like that.

I love House of the Scorpian. It was such a great book. I also love the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. Those are fantastically written and have such a good plot. Rick Riordan came up with a great idea for that series. Whenever somebody asks for a good book, I recommend those.

I didn't really notice that, no offense. He's a good writer, but he takes forever to come out with a new book. I forgot all about eragon by the time brisingr came out, so I had to reread the first two books. And now he's coming out with a 4th book, so that basically takes away the whole "Trilogy" idea. We'll just have to wait another 3 years for the next book.
