Re: Sounds of Music C
You can actually change the rhythm and notes, but just for the harmony.

Re: Sounds of Music C
The basic premise of a harmony is that it has different notes and/or rhythms than the melody (well, I suppose you could play the whole thing in octaves, but that wouldn't be very interesting).
It's a shame that they don't let us mess with Shenandoah...I wanted to do something cool with it, like an alternating melody between the two instruments or a canon or a theme and variation(s).

or you can just use all of those ideas in your own song... =PAlphaTauri wrote:The basic premise of a harmony is that it has different notes and/or rhythms than the melody (well, I suppose you could play the whole thing in octaves, but that wouldn't be very interesting).

Re: Sounds of Music C
Yeah, but then I have one really cool piece (which I still haven't picked out
) and a rather boring version of Shenandoah. I just wish that we had more freedom to "be musical" with the piece that they give us. I think that it would better demonstrate which teams put effort into it (the ones that come up with really nice arrangements) and which teams don't (the ones who just play what's printed on the page and add a little harmony).
But that's just my opinion.

However, it's supposed to judge the performance of the instrument. If you don't play what's on the page as it's written, maybe they'll take it as the instrument CAN'T play it properly.AlphaTauri wrote:Yeah, but then I have one really cool piece (which I still haven't picked out) and a rather boring version of Shenandoah. right. I actually like how they're doing it now because that gives a fair basis for judging that everyone will have the same standards for.Bogoradwee wrote:However, it's supposed to judge the performance of the instrument. So, I don't konw if this has been mentioned(I'm too lazy to look.), but how heavy of harmony parts do think they will expect? On the rules sheet, it says to avoid unison, so does that imply never to use unison, or just not all the time?

Re: Sounds of Music C
that's really up to your musical opinion. If you feel like the song fits right when your harmony part is only chords, thats fine, but I doubt you'll receive full credit on harmonies with just chords...Modder wrote:So, I don't konw if this has been mentioned(I'm too lazy to look.), but how heavy of harmony parts do think they will expect? Re: Sounds of Music C
Hi! I am making a flute for the wind instrument for my team. I am confused about how the first note of Shenandoah (D4) is below the required range for the instruments because the wind instrument is supposed to be able to play a scale from C4-C5. Am I an octave off, or is it assumed that we are transposing the melody into the key of C so that the first note would be a G3?
Also, I have built a flute with lowest note C4. However, this is a very long instrument and the fingerings are awkwardly spaced (far apart from each other). As a flute player, I know that a C4 is the lowest note most flutes can play and a lot of flute players have trouble getting it out because it's so low, but looking at the discussion board, I don't think anyone has had major problems with this yet. I just feel like something is not right here. Am I missing something?
Thanks!

Re: Sounds of Music C
Below the two lines of music, the rules say something to the effect of, "The music is written in the key that it's in to make it easier to read. Feel free to transpose into any key you want."
